Chinese steelmaking giants have again come to the aid of Midwest Corporation’s ailing bid to build $3bn of rail and port infrastructure in Western Australia’s Midwest region.

Midwest’s private consortium partner, Yilgarn Infrastructure, has reportedly struck a $750m deal with two of Midwest’s iron ore buyers, steelmakers Sinosteel and Ansteel, and three other Chinese companies.

Midwest wants to build about 350 km of rail and the deepwater port infrastructure at Oakajee, 22 km north of Geraldton.

But rival iron ore miner Murchison Metals – backed by Toll Holdings, South Korea’s Posco and Japan’s Mitsubishi – had its prospects boosted when Midwest was told by the WA Government last month that Midwest’s 30-year-old state agreement was not longer valid.

Babcock & Brown-owned WestNet is also proposing to develop rail infrastructure to the port.

The winning bidder could begin construction in mid-2008, with completion in 2011.
