The Victorian Government is calling on “the most experienced transport operators from around the world” to bid for the next contract to run Melbourne’s train network.

Starting in late 2027, the MR5 train franchisee will operate and maintain the city’s metropolitan train network, delivering more than 2000 daily services.

They’ll be responsible for seven train maintenance depots, more than 220 stations, nearly 7000 employees, an evolving fleet and more than 1000 kilometres of rack.

The expectation is that the operator will deliver a “world class” service that connects seamlessly with Melbourne’s tram network, regional rail services, buses and airport connections.

A statement from the government said: “The MR5 Train refranchise is an opportunity to raise the bar and deliver better outcomes for customers.

“This includes more reliable services, better customer experience, improved accessibility and more real-time data, as well as the flexibility to adapt and innovate for the future.

“All this comes with the purpose of servicing the needs of our dynamic and vibrant communities.”

The competitive tender process will ensure the best partner is chosen to deliver optimal outcomes for Victorians, the government said.

A Registration of Experience (ROE) process is expected to be undertaken in September, marking the start of the procurement process.

The State will assess ROE Responses against requirements and determine the Interested Parties to be invited to participate in an Expression of Interest (EOI) process.
