Train customers are being urged to plan their travel in advance over the Christmas and New Year school holiday period, with track closures and transport changes required to allow for crucial Cross River Rail and associated works.
The track closures – to take place from Saturday 21 December 2024 to Sunday 19 January 2025 – will see all train lines on the South East Queensland rail network impacted at different stages, including buses replacing trains in some sections and major timetable changes to all lines.
Cross River Rail Delivery Authority CEO Graeme Newton said the size and scale of the works required crews to spend lengthy periods in the rail corridor.
“More than 300 workers will be busy during the typically quieter school holiday period carrying out the massive scope of work, which cannot occur safely while trains are running,” he said.
“The work that needs to be undertaken goes beyond the underground tunnels and stations that make up Cross River Rail.
“It includes hundreds of metres of track removal and realignment between Bowen Hills and Albion for the Mayne Yard stabling facility, connecting overhead line equipment from the wider network into Cross River Rail’s southern tunnel entry, signal relocation and testing, as well as station works at Yeerongpilly, Salisbury and Moorooka.
“These works require continuous and extensive access to the rail corridor and could not be completed safely or efficiently with trains on the tracks. We thank customers for their patience and understanding as we continue to deliver these important works to help upgrade and modernise the rail network.”
Alternative travel arrangements would be in place during the closure, with customers urged to plan their travel in advance and allow extra travel time.
