Works are ramping up to remove the level crossing at Webster Street in Dandenong, Victoria and build a new road underpass.
Crews have been deployed along the rail corridor, setting up site offices, fencing, and storage areas for materials and equipment.
At Thomas Street, early piling works have already started, and full-scale construction is set to kick off in the coming weeks.
To get the site ready, teams are relocating utilities and using earthmovers and excavators to prepare the ground for piling and excavation.
The new underpass will stretch approximately 450 metres, connecting Cheltenham and Hammond roads with Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street.
It will divert traffic away from Dandenong’s CBD and keep heavy vehicles off Webster Street, which the Victorian Government says will make the area quieter and safer for locals.
The level crossing will close later this year to prepare for an uptick in train services when the Metro Tunnel opens.
The new road underpass will open in 2026, two years ahead of schedule.
With the removal of the Webster Street level crossing, Dandenong and the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines will be boom gate free later this year.
