Major work is underway at Reservoir where a new station is being built as part of Victoria’s level crossing removal program.
The level crossing of High Street on the Mernda Line is being removed through the construction of a rail-over-road bridge, along with the rebuilding of the adjacent Reservoir railway station.
The state’s Level Crossing Removal Authority says work has begun to remove the old crossing and begin construction of the new one, which will be incorporated with a landscaped public plaza.
The new station is to include above-ground platforms with access via lifts and stairs, and a station forecourt accessible from either side of the station plaza with waiting areas, better lighting and station facilities, “vastly improving travel for the 4,000 people who use the station every day,” the Authority said on January 23.
The level crossing being removed is traversed by 36,000 road vehicles each day on average. Three collisions, one fatality, and 26 near misses have been reported there in the last ten years.
With works underway, the station’s carpark and bus interchange has been closed, with temporary bus stops set up nearby.
The new station is scheduled for completion in 2020.
