Piling is now complete for the new road bridge in Altona, Victoria marking a major milestone in the removal of the “dangerous” Maidstone Street level crossing.
A 140-tonne piling rig drilled 23 holes up to nine metres deep and 1.5 metres wide. Each hole has been filled with a reinforced steel cage and concrete to form part of the bridge foundations.
Over the coming months, crews will continue relocating underground services and building the foundations ahead of the bridge beam lifts scheduled for mid-2026.
The Victorian Government said: “Removing the Maidstone Street level crossing will create better connections for this growing industrial area and make travel safer for more than 14,400 vehicles that currently use the crossing each day, as well as for pedestrians and cyclists.
“The dangerous and congested Maidstone Street level crossing will be gone for good in 2027, with the new bridge open to traffic, boosting safety and easing congestion by permanently separating trains and vehicles.”
Work is also progressing to remove the nearby level crossings at Maddox and Champion roads in Newport, with the Werribee Line set to be boom gate-free by 2030.
