Work begins on Melbourne’s biggest tram stop

A new tram stop near the Melbourne Cricket Ground will be the city’s biggest, Victorian transport minister Jacinta Allan has said.

Work began on Saturday, October 10 on the new 80 metre tram stop for Wellington Parade in Jolimont, near the MCG.

Allan said the 80m platform had enough room for two E-Class trams, and thus could handle as many as 450 passengers at one time.

“It’s fitting that Melbourne’s biggest venue has Melbourne’s biggest tram stop,” Allan said, “to move tens of thousands of sports fans to and from the MCG.”

The new stop will be located between Powlett and Clarendon Streets on Wellington Parade, and is being built specifically for MCG crowds. It will combine two pairs of existing stops, and improve passenger connectivity to Jolimont railway station, Allan explained.

“The new stop will also be safer, more accessible and more comfortable for passengers who use the stop every day,” Allan added, saying real-time information, seats and shelters would be installed to improve passenger comfort.

The stop will access low-floor trams, will have more lighting, and will include a new pedestrian crossing, the minister said.

Various road, tram and pedestrian impacts will take place during construction.

  1. Melbourne’s tramways still playing catch-up to the unfortunately long-gone Sydney tramways… A ‘biggest’ tram stop should be a veritable station with 6 platforms of 110m or greater and two pedestrian overpasses. Randwick Racecourse.
