Passengers on the Prospector service between Perth and Kalgoorlie will soon have access to Wi-Fi, in a 12 month trial.
Following a feasibility study, Prospector trains will be fitted out with the technology to allow passengers to stay connected in remote areas.
“We have committed to a 12-month trial of Wi-Fi on the Prospector, to make journeys between Perth and Kalgoorlie more enjoyable for passengers,” said Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan.
WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said that the improved connectivity would improve the passenger experience.
“Adding Wi-Fi to the Prospector will go hand-in-hand with the personalised on-demand entertainment systems already on board, giving passengers more choice and more flexibility in how they choose to enjoy this wonderful journey across our beautiful state.”
When the new Australind railcars enter service, commuters will also be able to access Wi-Fi on board. Passengers on the AvonLink service already have access to 3G Wi-Fi and as part of the Prospector trial will have their service upgraded.
Passengers are also set to benefit from upgrades to Kalgoorlie station, with architects appointed to set out the scope of works for the heritage station. Major works to preserve the station for future years include refurbishing internal rooms, installing more accessible facilities, fixing external doors and window frames, and installing security doors.
Once the scoping works are complete a request for proposal for the upgrades will be issued. Expected in the coming weeks, the tender will target local builders and work is expected to begin in earl 2021.
