WA companies invited to rolling stock strategy briefing

The McGowan government has invited Western Australian manufacturing companies to attend a briefing session later this month detailing its Metronet rolling stock procurement program.

The expansive rail Metronet rail projects will substantially increase demand for new rolling stock to be added to the existing Transperth fleet. The government expects 102 new railcars (making up 17 six-carriage sets) will need to be built.

The procurement strategy involves growing WA’s capacity to build the new railcars locally, with a target of 50 per cent local content work for the manufacturing process.

“Metronet will transform Western Australia’s public transport network and provide opportunities for local businesses that have the capability to help plan, develop and implement these projects,” WA premier Mark McGowan said.

“This briefing will inform manufacturers about the tendering process for future railcars and help assist the State Government tap into local expertise to effectively deliver world-class public transport across Perth.”

The government hopes that the briefing will help indicate the already existing local manufacturing potential and training opportunities in the state, as well as paths towards the creation of further jobs and apprenticeships.

Networking opportunities for local small to medium-sized businesses that may seek involvement in future supply chain work will also be provided.

“The State Budget included $322 million over four years to build new Metronet railcars, maximising WA’s manufacturing capability,” state transport minister Rita Saffioti said.

“Metronet is a game-changing plan for Perth and I would encourage interested businesses to sign up and learn more about the pipeline of opportunities.”

The briefing will be held at Technology Park in Bentley on Thursday, October 26. Interested businesses wishing to attend must register online by Friday, October 20.
