Victoria plans concrete sleepers for fast tracks

Victorian shadow transport spokesman Geoff Leigh "cannot be believed" over claims about the state’s Regional Fast Rail project, according to the government.

Transport minister Peter Batchelor was responding to claims by Mr Leigh that the government is cutting project costs by using 700,000 timber sleepers.

Mr Batchelor said between 50,000 and 75,000 new timber sleepers will be used to replace existing timber sleepers and between 350,000 and 550,000 concrete sleepers will be installed.

"By using concrete sleepers for the Regional Fast Rail project, the Bracks Government will make significant savings in long-term track maintenance costs and will also provide better track structure for the higher speeds trains will reach as part of the Regional Fast Rail project," he said.
