Vaile: faster north-south rail link unlikely before 2019

The federal transport minister in waiting, deputy prime minister and trade minister Mark Vaile, yesterday (Monday, September 25) blamed bottlenecks in Sydney for the relative dearth of freight on trains.

Bolstering the push for a faster Brisbane-Melbourne rail route, Mr Vaile said a mix of local government and private sector players were discussing at a conference at Parkes today ways to make the rail route viable, the ABC reported.

However, he warned that it would take until 2019 to develop the inland rail route, even if planning started now.

And he was unable to commit federal funds to the proposed faster link.

He urged delegates to provide feedback to the Federal Government.
