A number of projects were underway on the Ballarat Line over the weekend, including building a second track at Ballan, 78 kilometres northwest of Melbourne.
A ‘construction blitz’ kicked off last weekend as part of the Ballarat Line Upgrade, which includes building a new station at Toolern, and delivering upgrades to stations at Ballan, Bacchus Marsh, Wendouree and Rockbank.
Victorian transport minister Jacinta Allan on Monday said crews and equipment were on site at Ballan, with work including earthworks to prepare for installation of a second track at the station.
The second track is intended to facilitate more services to be added to the line and help boost reliability.
The Ballan Station upgrade also includes a second platform, and an accessible pedestrian overpass to support improved services and better access for passengers. The overpass will include lifts and ramps.
Allan said the new station will also feature a better bus bay layout, new bicycle storage, CCTV cameras and lighting.
“Thanks to all Ballan Station passengers for your patience while we get to work improving your station,” the minister said.
“We’re getting on with real projects that will deliver a better station, easier access for all passengers and importantly, more frequent and reliable services on the line.”
Buses have been replacing trains during the work, but services will return on Tuesday, October 9.
Elsewhere on the Ballarat Line Upgrade work blitz, crews worked this weekend to duplicate the Toolern Creek rail bridge, while others were building a new stabling facility at Maddingley, and installing new track in sections between Caroline Springs and Melton.
