Updated designs have been released for the new Croydon Transport Hub that is being built as part of the removal of the dangerous and congested Coolstore Road level crossing in Melbourne.
The project will build new road connections and a new rail bridge to unify Croydon’s town centre, replacing the level crossing and roundabout at Coolstore Road where five roads currently intersect, causing traffic chaos when boom gates are down.
Community consultation has helped shape the design of the new Croydon Station, by incorporating bluestone paving, wooden seating and glazed brick buildings to complement the look and feel of the nearby Main Street shopping precinct.
It will also be built with open spaces to create better sightlines, more CCTV and upgraded lighting to create a safer precinct for commuters.
The new Croydon Station will provide commuters with a modern precinct that includes elevated platforms, 2 new entrances and forecourts, upgraded parking, and safer drop-off zones on both sides of the train tracks.
The project team has also refined the construction methods to build the new rail bridge to ensure more than 200 trees that were previously marked for removal will be retained, and will plant more than 70,000 trees, shrubs and grasses during landscaping works after the rail bridge has been completed.
About 10,000 vehicles and 100 train services travel through the level crossing every weekday, causing traffic snarls in the heart of Croydon’s shopping precinct.
The busy bus interchange is also home to up to 19 bus routes every day and will be revamped with better access for buses and safer links to the station for pedestrians.
Meanwhile, works will also begin to relocate the 100-year-old Croydon war memorial from the middle of the congested Coolstore Road roundabout to a safer, more accessible site for the community at Civic Square, Croydon.
The Level Crossing Removal Project has been working closely with the Croydon RSL to ensure their plans for moving the war memorial can be completed.
The war memorial’s move will pave the way for the removal of the dangerous Coolstore Road roundabout.
