Two people died after a freight train collided with a car at the Reddies Road level crossing in Cressy, Victoria.
The incident happened at about 10.15am yesterday morning, Tuesday January 20.
The driver of the car and a passenger in the vehicle lost their lives.
In a statement released yesterday, the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), which manages the interstate standard-gauge freight network on which the crash took place, said it was working closely with the train operator to provide support.
The train driver and two other staff were the only occupants of the train at the time of the collision.
ARTC said the team on board were not physically injured and were assisting police with their enquiries.
The organisation also said it was working with Victoria Police, emergency services and rail safety authorities.
“ARTC extends its deepest condolences to their families, loved ones and communities at this difficult time,” it said.
The Office of the Chief Investigator, Transport Safety and the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) were notified following the incident, and ONRSR representatives attended the scene.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
