A 22-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy have been charged for allegedly trying to stop coal trains entering the Port of Newcastle.

The pair were arrested just after 6am on Wednesday, September 5, after officers from the Newcastle City Police District responded to reports of two people trespassing in the rail corridor.

The 22-year-old will appear in Newcastle Local Court on September 27, and is facing several charges.

The 17-year-old, who – according to local reports – live streamed the incident on Facebook, will face children’s court on September 24.

Newcastle City Police District Commander Superintendent Brett Greentree noted the incident was the second of its kind this week, and reminded the public of the dangers inherent around trains.

“It is extremely dangerous to enter a rail corridor,” Greentree said.

“We support the rights of individuals and groups to protest peacefully, but not when it impedes on their safety and the safety of others.”
