Truss hoses down Tasmanian rail rescue cash rumour

The office for federal transport minister Warren Truss has played down suggestions that it will make an 11th hour funding announcement today (Friday, December 9) to save intermodal rail freight services in Tasmania.

Operator Pacific National’s deadline for intermodal services expires on Monday (December 12) and it has warned that it will cease those services if federal and state governments fail to offer a guarantee of sufficient investment in Tasmania’s rail infrastructure.

A spokeswoman for Mr Truss said the government was working on a response to Pacific National’s request and hoped to give it to the rail operator in time for its next board meeting in just four days’ time, on Tuesday (December 13).

Media reports of a "major funding package" to be announced later today had not emanated from Mr Truss’s office, she said.
