A transport consultancy firm working on the New South Wales grain rail crisis, said it had come up with a possible solution, The Land reported today (Thursday, April 3).

RMAus Transportation said an industry-owned “Grain Rail Group” would solve the problem caused by Pacific National’s almost complete withdrawal from grain transportation in NSW and Victoria.

RMAus said the group could be comprised of investors from farmers, grain handlers and exporters, financers and a management group.

The NSW Farmers Association grains committee approved the plan in principle last Thursday when RMAus presented it to members at a meeting in Condobolin.

The plan is different from the solution currently being perused by the NSW State Government where farmers would offer Pacific National long-term contracts on a “take or pay” arrangement, The Land said.

The Victorian Government and railway unions had already endorsed RMAus’s plan, it said.
