Trains have resumed between Melton and Wendouree in regional Victoria, following an earlier collision between a Melbourne-bound V/Line train and delivery van at a Yarragon level crossing.

Victoria Police said the driver of the van was lucky to escape with minor injuries and had been taken to hospital for assessment.

There was significant damage to the van, with various packages and contents strewn across the site.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and have called on anyone who saw the accident, or had footage of it, to contact Crime Stoppers.

There were major delays on the Traralgon and Bairnsdale lines after the collision, with coaches replacing trains for several hours.

V/Line has advised the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) and will conduct an investigation into the crash.
