Train figure fiddling won’t fix system failures: NSW opposition

The NSW opposition has demanded that the State Government wait for the final Waterfall inquiry report before "tinkering" with train on-time running figures.

Shadow transport minister Mike Gallacher said extending the on-time running parameters will create a false impression of improvement in the system.

"Today’s recommendations by the rail regulator to extend the definition of on-time running beyond three minutes 59 seconds is simply a case of tinkering with the numbers to make the Government’s statistics appear better than they are," Mr Gallacher said.

He said on-time running is one of a number of systemic problems that Justice Peter McInerney is looking into in his Waterfall crash inquiry and any changes should await the final report.
