The driver of a train which crashed into an overturned truck in southern New South Wales last week has refuted suggestions that he was warned that the truck was obstructing the track.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) is investigating the accident, which closed the line between Sydney and Melbourne for about 14 hours from Thursday night (November 2).

The Graincorp train collided with the truck at a level crossing at Illabo, near Junee, after the truck had earlier overturned while trying to cross the tracks.

Australian Rail Track Corporation records show that up to four messages were sent to the train before it crashed, but the train driver maintains that there was no warning.

ARTC operations manager Denise McMillan told the ABC that its warning systems were working at the time of the crash.

Ms McMillan would not ruled out the possibility of faulty equipment on the train or driver error, the ABC said.

"Obviously there was some problem with the way in which the driver received the message and that he couldn’t hear it, but I can confirm that the message was sent and was definitely received by the locomotive," she told the ABC.
