Top research earns award for Institute of Railway Technology

<p>Monash University’s Institute of Railway Technology has won the Railway Technical Society of Australasia (RTSA) biennial industry award for 2002.</p> <p>The award is presented for recognition of achievement within the industry and the institute was commended for its research work.</p> <p>In the award citation, judges said the Institute of Railway Technology had produced excellent research for BHP and the Australian and overseas railway industry, "covering the whole range from heavy haul through to light rail systems".</p> <p>"It has a universal reputation for effectively solving railway related problems in a range of disciplines with proven cost saving solutions being developed," the citation stated.</p> <p>"It has particularly excelled in the area of wheel&#47rail interface issues, including development of improved rail profiles, with its solutions having been adopted throughout the world. </p> <p>"Its technological research has enabled planned progressive increases in axle loads while effecting life extensions of rail and rolling stock."</p> <p>The group was established 30 years ago as part of the former Melbourne Research Laboratories.</p> <br />
