Temporary closure for Fairfield Station

Brisbane’s Fairfield station will closed from today until late 2022 to ensure its upgrade can be undertaken safely and more efficiently.

The works will include:

  • Reconstruction of platforms 1 and 2 including building new retaining walls, and the addition of a third platform
  • Relocation of in-ground services
  • Installation of new shade canopies and new station furniture (seating, bins, etc.)
  • Construction of a new pedestrian overpass, lifts and stairs
  • Installation of services including CCTV, wayfinding signage, lighting and ticketing.

When the station reopens, construction will continue to complete permanent features. These activities have less on an impact on station operations and will occur when services are operating from the station.

During the closure, pedestrian access will be maintained over the rail corridor between Equity and Mildmay Streets via existing overpasses. The overpass at the station will need to temporarily close to allow for construction of the new accessible overpass. Advance notification will be provided to the community prior to any closure outlining detour routes.

Pedestrians will not be able to access the station platforms or construction area during the closure.

There are plenty of alternative travel options during the closure:

  • Commuters from the Fairfield Road side of the station could use the high frequency StationLink route 109 (with stops on Fairfield Road near Ashby Street) or route 196 (departing from Fairfield Gardens Shopping Centre)
  • Travellers from the Annerley side of Fairfield station could use high frequency bus services, such as route 100, on Ipswich Road
  • People who would like to continue travelling by train can use Yeronga station, which will reopen on Monday 14 March, with plenty of space in the commuter car park on Fairfield Road
  • Yeerongpilly station is the closest station with lift access.
