TasRail has shared an update on its Locomotive Life Extension Project, with three 2050 class locomotives now completed under the program.

Five legacy locomotives are still to be finished, and the next locomotive (2006) is on schedule to come out of the workshop later this year.

In total, TasRail is overhauling eight 2050 and 2000 class legacy locomotives in Launceston, to prolong their operational life and improve service reliability and safety.

The overhauls involve:

  • installing new engines to boost performance and reliability
  • revamping major components (such as traction motors, generators braking and control systems and locomotive wiring)
  • enhancing drivers’ cabins, in consultation with TasRail’s operational team, to improve efficiency and comfort.

TasRail said the project is a “genuinely Tasmanian effort”, from skilled trades in the workshops to a wide network of local suppliers, supporting everything from small components to complex fabrication.

“Along the way, we’ve also been able to grow our workforce and build capability – with our teams gaining valuable experience in completely stripping, rebuilding and re-qualifying locomotive components for the future,” they said.

“And, in a time where cost of living pressures are front of mind, there’s something powerful about extending the life of existing assets.

“Rebuilding locomotives is not just practical – it’s sustainable, helping us get more out of what we already have while keeping freight moving efficiently across the state, with the added benefit of buying our business time to properly assess other technologies.”
