Work about to begin on level crossings in Werribee

Site establishment works are about to get underway to remove two level crossings west of Melbourne near Werribee.

This month, site office and are preparation works will begin at the Werribee Street level crossing and at the Old Geelong Road level crossing in Hoppers Crossing.

At Werribee Street, the Level Crossing Removal Project will construct a new rail bridge over Werribee Street. Works in April and May will involve setting up site offices on Cottrell Street, locating utilities including electricity and water and removing trees and vegetation within the project area. Work will then begin on piling for bridge foundations and a temporary track, to ensure freight services can continue running on the Geelong Line.

Similar works will get underway at the Hoppers Crossing Site to prepare for the construction of a road bridge and pedestrian overpass above the rail line. The Hoppers Crossing station carpark will be relocated while works are progressing.

These works notifications following the confirmation of designs for the two level crossing removals. McConnell Dowell, Arup, Mott MacDonald, and Metro Trains Melbourne will be delivering the work, in addition to the Cherry Street level crossing work nearby.

Designs for Werribee level crossings revealed

Further designs for level crossing removals in Werribee have been released.

An alliance of McConnell Dowell, Arup, Mott MacDonald, and Metro Trains Melbourne will deliver the project, which covers two level crossings.

The crossings are located at Old Geelong Road in Hoppers Crossing and Werribee Street in Werribee.

The $355.5 million worth of work will involve the construction of a road bridge near the current Old Geelong Road level crossing and a rail bridge over the Werribee Street level crossing.

The same alliance have been working on replacing the nearby Cherry Street level crossing.

A pedestrian overpass will replace the Old Geelong Road level crossing.

Freight services will be able to continue to run on the corridor on a temporary track.

The level crossing works will feed into further network improvements as part of the Western Rail Plan and Suburban Rail Loop.

New areas of open space will be created between Werribee Racecourse and Werribee River underneath the newly raised rail line.

Level crossing work comes to Werribee

Construction has begun on replacing the Cherry Street crossing in Werribee, Melbourne.

Instead of the current level crossing, a bridge will be built of the Werribee line between Tarneit Road and the Princes Highway.

Delivering the project is an alliance of McConnell Dowell, Arup, Mott MacDonald, and Metro Trains Melbourne. The alliance has already completed three other level crossing removals around Melbourne, and is building a stabling yard at Wyndham Vale.

The Cherry Street project is the first level crossing removal for the Werribee region. It will be followed by level crossing removals at Old Geelong Rd and Werribee Street. All will be completed in 2022, according to the Level Crossing Removal Project.

Victorian Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan visited the site on January 13 as work began on the $113.8 million contract.

“The Cherry Street level crossing can cause delays of up to 38 minutes in the two-hour morning peak, so removing these boom gates will mean less frustration and better travel times for drivers,” said Allan.

Member for Werribee Tim Pallas highlighted the economic benefit the project would bring to the local community.

“These major rail and road projects are creating thousands of jobs in Melbourne’s west and providing vital experience to Victorian apprentices, trainees and cadets under the Major Project Skills Guarantee,” said Pallas.

In addition to the level crossing replacement works, 130 new car parking spaces will be created at Werribee station.

Where cars once crossed the rail line at Cherry Street a new pedestrian underpass will be built to connect shops and homes for pedestrians and cyclists, and a shared-use path will also open up new connections in the area around the rail corridor.

Melbourne to axe three more level crossings by 2022

Three level crossings on the Werribee line in Melbourne are to get the chop as part of the Victorian Government’s ongoing Level Crossing Removal Project.

The crossings will be removed at Cherry Street, Werribee Street and Old Geelong Road in Hoppers Crossing by 2022. The means by which the crossings will be removed was eventually narrowed down to one of two options, with the government expressing a preference for each crossing.

The preferred design for the Cherry Street crossing is a road bridge running over the rail line at Tarneit Road, with ‘Design B’ comprising an underpass at Cherry Street.

The road bridge was cited as the preferred option as it would allow the project to use the irrigation channel reserve adjacent to Wyndham City Council officers to provide a direct connection from Princes Highway to Railway Avenue and Tarneit Road.

The alternate design would involve digging a 4.6-metre trench to lower Cherry Street while the rail tracks retained their present level.

A rail bridge is the preferred option for the Werribee Street crossing, with a new road bridge at Bulban Road as backup. The rail bridge was chosen as the preferred option as it would incorporate improvements at Wyndham Park, and open up space below the rail line.

For Old Geelong Road, the preferred option is a new road bridge connecting Old Geelong Road to the Princes Highway, with a road bridge at the current crossing as the ‘B’ design 

Two community drop-in sessions will be held around Werribee and Hoppers Crossing to prompt further discussion around the project and allow the public to get involved on Saturday July 13 from 10am12:30pm and Tuesday July 16 from 5pm7:30pm.

Labor to meet with stakeholders for Suburban Rail Loop planning

The Andrews Labor Government is due to meet with representatives from Melbourne suburbs for consultations on the first stage of the Suburban Rail Loop.

Labor will meet with representatives from the suburbs of Whitehorse, Monash and Kingston to discuss first-stage implementation of the proposed corridor for the $50 billion project’s South East Section. The talks will include consultation regarding ecological and geotechnical studies

The Victorian Government looks to be on its own in delivering the ambitious rail project, after Labor was defeated at the federal election over the weekend. Labor leader Bill Shorten had made a commitment to provide $10 billion for the project.

Billed as Australia’s largest ever public transport project, construction on the Suburban Rail Loop is currently pencilled for a 2022 start and may not be completed until the 2050s.

The project involves construction of a new underground rail line that will connect several Melbourne suburbs to the city’s existing major lines so that  improving connectivity and reducing commuting times. The line will run 90km from the Frankston line in the southeast to the Werribee line in the west via Melbourne Airport in the north.

Initial site investigations have been proposed for the second half of 2019, but the final number of stations has yet to be determined.

“The Suburban Rail Loop will change the way we move around Melbourne forever, and we’re not wasting a minute getting this vital project started,” said Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews.

“It will create and support local jobs and slash travel times, getting people where they need to go.”
