Sydney?s new light rail project goes to tender

<span class="" id="parent-fieldname-description"> The company or consortium that wins the major contract for Sydney’s planned $1.6bn CBD and South East Light Rail project will also take control of the existing Inner West Light Rail network, Transport for NSW has announced. </span> <p>TfNSW last week said that it was looking for potential companies or consortia to execute the major contract for the new light rail line, which will link Circular Quay with Randwick, via Moore Park.<br /><br />The major contract will cover design, construction, services relocations, operation and maintenance of the 12km project, as well as the operation and maintenance of the Inner West Light Rail network, and will be delivered as a Public Private Partnership subject to value for money, TfNSW said.<br /><br />Early works for the new project will be handled under a separate contract, which TfNSW also announced last week.<br /><br />State minister for transport, Gladys Berejiklian, said the government was getting on with building a project that would benefit all of Sydney.<br /><br />“In less than a year since we announced the CBD and South East Light Rail project, we’ve appointed a world-class project director, conducted extensive community consultation, and signed Memoranda of Understanding with key partners including the City of Sydney, Randwick City Council, Centennial Parklands and the University of NSW,&quot she said.<br /><br />&quotI am pleased to announce that we have now also bedded down the project’s delivery strategy and will be asking the private sector to join us in delivering this significant project for Sydney.<br /><br />&quotThis expansion of the light rail network in Australia’s only global city will present challenges, so we are looking for companies with knowledge and experience in managing complex projects in busy urban environments.&quot<br /><br />Invitations for Expressions of Interest for the major PPP and the early works contracts were released on the NSW eTenders website (<a href=""><strong></strong></a>) on October 21.<br /><br />It follows a market sounding exercise undertaken with industry, TfNSW said.<br /><br />Expressions of Interest are welcomed until late this year for both contracts, at which point the government will put together a shortlist of potentials who will then go ahead and submit more detailed proposals.<br /><br />A winner for each contract is expected by mid-2014.<br /><br />The new CBD and South East Light Rail project will link Circular Quay and Central, the Moore Park sporting and entertainment precinct including the Sydney Cricket Ground and Sydney Football Stadium, Randwick Racecourse, the University of NSW and Prince of Wales Hospital at Randwick.<br /><br />The Inner West Route, which has been running since 1997, connects Sydney’s inner west region with the CBD at Central Station.</p>
