Sydney needs to catch up on landside infrastructure

Land-based infrastructure planning and logistics must be brought up to scratch to build on port efficiency, Sydney Port Corporation CEO Greg Martin said.

Mr Martin told the Australian Rail Summit in Sydney that Sydney is one of the most efficient ports in Australia.

"However, it is no point holding this mantle if land transport logistics and infrastructure do not facilitate and build on port efficiency gains," he said.

Sydney has a leading role ensuring the efficient transport of cargo to and from ports, he said.

"To this end the current intermodal network servicing the needs of Sydney’s growing trade demand must expand further, focussing on the need for larger hubs such as Minto and St Marys and provision of dedicated freight rail track where freight trains currently share track with passenger services on the metro rail network beyond Enfield Chullora," he said.

Rail needs to play a bigger role moving cargo in the metropolitan area, he said.
