The New South Wales Government is considering extending the light rail system to Circular Quay.

Transport minister Carl Scully said a feasibility study will look into ways a light rail link between the existing line and Circular Quay could be developed.

As part of the study, an improved bus/rail interchange at Central Station will also be examined.

The extension will possible once the Cross City Tunnel is completed in 2005 because it will remove thousands of vehicles a day from Sydney streets and free up space for public transport improvements.

Light rail could be used by people who live and work in the CBD, as an alternative to crowded suburban trains for passengers arriving from Newcastle, Wollongong and the Blue Mountains, and it could replace buses.

A community-based taskforce will be established to consider requests and ideas for other light rail projects around NSW.
