The Federal Government is to spend $2m appeasing residents affected by the proposed Southern Sydney Freight Line.

Federal environment minister Peter Garrett yesterday gave his approval to the Australian Rail Track Corporation’s 30-km freight corridor, which will connect the south-western Sydney suburb of Macarthur to Sefton, near the Enfield intermodal terminal.

Mr Garrett said the funding package, a series of “community offsets”, would have to be rolled out before construction could begin.

“I’m aware that there have been some concerns by locals and councils about the impact of the proposal on local amenity and for this reason have included a range of conditions specifically to address this,” Mr Garrett said.

The funding includes extra car parking and a plan to improve the aesthetics of the rail corridor.
