Swietelsky Rail Australia (SRA) has successfully completed the Australian Rail Track Corporation’s (ARTC) seven-month Early Works Ballast Rehabilitation Program.
Delivered across three major possessions between December 2025 and May 2026, the program formed part of ARTC’s federally funded Network Investment Program and included full-depth ballast rehabilitation, drainage improvements, track restoration and material handling activities across approximately 10 kilometres of railway.
Across the program, SRA delivered:
- 5288 metres of ballast rehabilitation and cleaning
- More than 8500 tonnes of new ballast installation
- More than 22,840 metres of track resurfacing
- About 50 metres of ballast undercutting
- More than 10 kilometres of drainage line and access road improvements
The works were undertaken to address ballast condition, improve drainage performance and restore track geometry, helping to extend asset life, reduce future maintenance requirements and improve the long-term performance of the corridor.
SRA Managing Director Anne Connors said the successful completion of the program demonstrated the important role mechanised maintenance plays in supporting the future performance of Australia’s rail network.
“This program was about delivering long-term improvements to one of Australia’s most important freight and passenger rail corridors,” Connors said.
“Through targeted ballast rehabilitation, drainage improvements and track restoration works, we’ve helped improve the reliability, resilience and operational performance of the corridor while creating a more maintainable asset for the future.”
Connors said the final possession, completed in May 2026, marked the culmination of the Early Works Program and highlighted the complexity involved in delivering large-scale mechanised rail maintenance within a live operational environment.
More than 100 personnel and 79 specialised rail and support vehicles were mobilised to deliver the works, with multiple workfronts operating simultaneously and incident-free throughout the possession.
This included the coordinated operation of an SRA’s RM95 ballast cleaning machine, material handling wagons, ballast train, adjacent line spoil train operations and high-production resurfacing equipment.
Connors said the scale of coordination required across the possession reflected the integrated approach that has become a hallmark of SRA project delivery.
The successful execution of modern rail maintenance programs requires the seamless coordination of multiple work fronts, specialist equipment, material handling systems and highly skilled personnel, balancing productivity, safety and operational efficiency within tightly constrained possession windows to achieve exceptional project outcomes.
“The plant and equipment are only one part of the story,” said SRA Engineering and Operations Manager Ben Senior.
“The real success of this program came from the people involved, the planners, machine crews, supervisors, engineers and support teams, all working together to safely deliver complex works across three major possessions.”
The completion of the Early Works Program provides lasting benefits for ARTC’s Main South Corridor, supporting improved asset condition, enhanced network resilience and more reliable rail operations for both freight and passenger services.
Connors said the project represented an important milestone for both SRA and ARTC.
“The success of this program reflects the capability of our people, the strength of our planning and delivery processes, and the value of investing in specialised mechanised maintenance solutions that improve outcomes for rail infrastructure owners and operators,” she said.
