Swedish passenger operator MTR Express will name one of its six new regional trains Trainy McTrainface, after a public poll selected the name.
The train is one of six new Stadler FLIRT units being acquired by MTR Express to run between Stockholm and Gothenburg.
With three trains already named – Estelle, Ingvar, and Glenn – MTR Express turned to the public to decide on the fourth. Trainy McTrainface was by far the most popular, with 49% of all votes cast in its favour, ahead of the other three finalists: Hakan, Miriam and Poseidon.
The fifth train is yet to be named.
The naming news comes after a 2016 vote selected the name ‘Boaty McBoatface’ for the British Antarctic Survey’s new research vessel.
In that case, Britain’s Natural Environment Research Council opted to ignore the vote, choosing the name the boat the RRS Sir David Attenborough, instead – much to the chagrin of good-natured voters.
MTR Express said the Boaty McBoatface backflip had disappointed the public, and it hoped naming its new train Trainy McTrainface would “be received with joy by many, not only in Sweden”.
