Stage Two of ‘The G’ opens Sunday

Stage Two of the Gold Coast Light Rail will begin services on December 17, with free trips to mark the first day of its opening.

Queensland’s assistant minister for tourism industry development Meaghan Scanlon said that the opening would take place on Sunday 17 December, earlier than initially planned.

“GCLR has connected our city like never before and it’s incredibly exciting to have the second stage ready to go,” Scanlon said.

“Stage Two will open well ahead of schedule and in plenty of time for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

“I want to invite Gold Coasters and visitors alike to come down on Sunday, ride the G for free and enjoy a great day out.”

Sunday will be a “family fun day”, Scanlon said, with face-painting and food stalls available alongside free tram travel on the light rail line. The activities will run from 6am until 2pm at Helensvale station, Parkwood station, Parkwood East station, and Gold Coast University Hospital station.

Revenue services on Stage Two will begin Monday, December 18.

The new 7.3-kilometre extension will mean that passengers can travel from Helensvale through to Broadbeach on the light rail.

“This is a new chapter for Queensland – seamlessly linking our two biggest cities for the first time,” state transport minister Mark Bailey said.

“Stage Two will mean an easy, one-transfer journey between Brisbane and the Gold Coast through Helensvale station.

“Helensvale station is now a key transport hub in the fast-growing northern Gold Coast with tram, train, bus, and taxi services all in one place.”

  1. Bit hard to “come down on Sunday” and try the “easy, one-transfer journey” when Beenleigh & Gold Coast line services are suspended for track work for the entire weekend. More like “hack around for hours in the rail replacement buses”.
