Smashing result for Tranz Rail level crossing campaign

<p>A drop in level crossing accidents show safety campaigns are finally getting through to motorists, New Zealand operator Tranz Rail said.</p> <p>Only seven level crossing accidents have occurred so far this year, compared with 12 for the same period in 2002 and a 10-year average of 17 accidents, the company said.</p> <p>Tranz Rail’s health and safety general manager Nicole Rosie said the work of its national level crossing forum had focussed on improving level crossing safety.</p> <p>"It is extremely pleasing to see the drop off in accidents compared to the worst year, which was 1996, when there were 47 accidents that year," she said.</p> <p>Last year there were 30.</p> <br />
