A drop from last year’s record grain harvest has pushed down the Australian Railroad Group’s (ARG) haulage figures for the month of January 2005, the company’s co-owner, Genesee and Wyoming Inc (GWI), reported.

The drop in grain traffic meant a decrease of 3,599 wagon-loads of grain for the Western Australian-based operator, compared to January 2004, GWI said.

Hook-and-pull traffic also declined for the period to the tune of 1,386 wagon-loads due to "non-recurring business" during January 2004.

However, an increase in iron ore traffic of 2,301 wagons helped offset these decreases.

Other commodities increased by a total of 614 wagons.

Overall traffic decreased 2.4% on January 2004, GWI said.
