Operator SCT is this week running its first official train from the recently-developed Logic terminal at Wodonga, the Victorian town on the border with New South Wales.
The service has left the terminal and is on its way to distant Western Australia.
The $18 million terminal investment is set to support local business growth and is to be officially opened in January next year, in conjunction with a new service SCT is providing to Queensland.
SCT Logistics chief executive Glenn Smith said the Logic Intermodal Terminal would play an important role with the expansion of Queensland services.
“Wodonga and regional Victoria host a number of large and successful businesses and we would like to see them benefit from this new development,” Smith said.
The new site provides customers with domestic and interstate rail line haul services, as well as rail port shuttle services to the Port of Melbourne, import and export container handling and warehouse and property solutions.
Rail port shuttle services are to operate in and out of Victoria’s north-east, helping increase export competitiveness from regional Victoria.
SCT is to operate a strategic partnership with DP World, providing a rail alternative to the Port of Melbourne aiding global imports and exports.
According to the company, it is expected SCT will employ an extra 70 personnel with truck drivers, forklift drivers and office staff when fully operational.
From January next year, SCT is to offer rail services into and out if its Brisbane Terminal in Bromelton, Queensland via the Logic facility.
“Whilst the North South corridor continues to be dominated by the road industry, we’re confident that our approach to this particular market, complemented by SCT’s unique rail model, will allow us to provide a strong value proposition to the market,” Smith said.
The 23-hectare site has access to the mainline rail track and includes a 6000 square metre cross dock terminal, and a 5000 square metre container handling area.
