Schenker sets sights on top five

<p>German logistics group Schenker wants to expand its position in global contract logistics. </p> <p>&#8220In the medium term, we want to be among the top five international contract logistics providers,&#8221 Norbert Bensel, head of the logistics division of Deutsche Bahn, Schenker’s parent group said.</p> <p>Last year, the division achieved a turnover of E1.2bn (US$1.6bn) from contract logistics, <em>Lloyd’s List</em> reported in London today (Monday, April 23).</p> <p>However, this did not include the respective activities of the subsidiary Bax Contract Logistics, which is part of the Air and Ocean Freight segment.</p> <p>Deutsche Bahn anticipates continuously high organic growth for the current year and is hoping to lift the profitability of its logistics arm.</p> <p>At the same time, Schenker opened its first multi-modal terminal in Finland. </p> <p>The 22,000 sq m facility in the port of Turku is connected to the European and Russian rail systems. </p> <p>Regional director Gran Aberg said he was confident that the Trans-Siberian railway could be used for the transport of consumer goods from Asia to Europe in the foreseeable future.</p> <br />
