<p>The rural rail track between Gulgong and Kandos in central New South Wales would need $80m to bring it up to freight standards, ABC local radio reports this morning (Friday, May 25).</p> <p>The State Government-owned Rail Infrastructure Corporation (RIC) – which owns 5,800 km of rural rail track in NSW – has reportedly told Mid-Western Regional Council that it would suspend use of the line.</p> <p>The line, with a 21-tonne axle load limit, would need $15m to stay open and up to $80m for it to be used for general freight services, the ABC reported.</p> <p>The 91-km section between Gulgong and Kandos is used infrequently by historic steam trains but the council wants to encourage its use for use as a coal feeder line from Lithgow.</p> <p>Coal from neighbouring regions could go to either Newcastle or Port Kembla if the rail was upgraded.</p> <br />
