The Queensland Government has signed $230m worth of project contracts for the construction of a rail spur to service Xstrata’s recently unveiled Rolleston mine development.

The 110-km Bauhinia spur will carry coal from the mine to existing Blackwater rail network at Kinrola.

It will haul 3.2m tonnes of coal in the first year, lifting to 8m tonnes in 2008.

Xstrata selected QR to construct the rail spur and haul the coal, after an open tender process, the government said.

Transport minister Paul Lucas said the development means that some upgrading of the Blackwater system will be required.
