The Chair of the Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board (RISSB), Dr Gillian Miles, is pleased to announce the appointment of Alan Fedda as its next Chief Executive Officer (CEO) effective from 22 April 2025.

Fedda succeeds Damien White, who has led RISSB with distinction. Alan Fedda is an executive leader with over 15 years of experience across government and private industries including transport, financial services, energy and telecommunications amongst others. He has extensive experience at an executive level managing planning, policy, strategy, operations, safety and environment, communications and stakeholder management, finance and people and culture. He was most recently the Deputy Head Transport Services in Victoria’s Department of Transport and Planning (DTP). Prior to this, Fedda was the Acting Chief Rail at DTP and the Managing Director of Transdev Sydney Ferries.

As Deputy Head of Transport Services (DTP), Fedda oversaw and successfully led divisions across operations, projects, asset management, risk, governance, performance, contract management and finance assurance. At Sydney Ferries Fedda delivered the world’s first On Demand Ferry Service, planned significant service changes to the network and rolled out a community consultation platform and commenced the build program of Sydney’s newest modern vessel fleet.

He is uniquely positioned to steer RISSB in delivering and elevating its role within the future rail landscape with a clear vision of RISSB’s role in driving rail industry interoperability, efficiency and safety in this time of rail reform.

In announcing this appointment, Dr Gillian Miles said: “The RISSB Board is excited to have Alan join the RISSB team and we look forward to working with him. Alan’s appointment will be instrumental as we position RISSB to be a part of the solution in the national rail reform agenda and supporting RISSB to continue to play a key role in driving rail industry interoperability, efficiency and safety.”

She added: “We thank Damien for his leadership and applaud his achievements during his time as CEO. Alan and Damien will be working closely together over the coming weeks to ensure the transition is seamless and best positions RISSB for the future to benefit all our stakeholders and the RISSB team.”
