RIC needs $1.5bn and 10 years to fix Sydney rail: leaked report

<p>Sydney’s city rail network needs at least $1.5bn in funding to catch up on a huge backlog of maintenance work, according to a New South Wales state cabinet document leaked to the <em>Sydney Morning Herald </em> today (Monday, April 28).</p> <p>It would take the Rail Infrastructure Corporation (RIC) 10 years to get on top of the delays, the <em>Herald </em> reported. </p> <p>The review of the metropolitan tracks, which are also used by rail freight, was completed for the cabinet’s budget committee in October last year.</p> <p>It said that RIC managers had a "fix-when-fail" approach to maintenance, the paper reported.</p> <p>The estimated $1.5bn did not include replacing overhead wiring or bridges, or work on the country network. </p> <br />
