The Australasian Railway Association (ARA) has released a new report aimed at helping rail organisations increase the use of recycled, reused and repurposed materials across their operations.
The report, Circular Opportunities in Rail, provides policy guidance, practical advice and industry case studies designed to support the adoption of circular economy principles throughout the rail sector.
ARA Chief Executive Officer, Caroline Wilkie, said the report forms part of the association’s commitment to advancing sustainable practices and reducing the industry’s environmental footprint.
“With circular solutions increasingly becoming a requirement in construction project specifications, this guide offers real-world advice for rail organisations seeking to increase their focus on this critical issue,” Wilkie said.
The report features case studies from organisations including the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), Metro Trains Melbourne, the Public Transport Authority of Western Australia, Aurizon, Yarra Trams, Aurecon and Victoria’s Level Crossing Removal Project.
It outlines practical approaches for rail suppliers, asset owners and project delivery organisations, while also providing examples of recycled materials and circular design principles that can be applied across rail infrastructure projects.
The ARA said wider adoption of circular economy practices has the potential to improve environmental outcomes, increase resource efficiency and drive innovation across the rail industry.
