Drivers have been warned to slow down at rail level crossings across regional New South Wales.
A reduced speed limit is now in effect on the Mitchell Highway near Trangie, with now in effect for the safety of all road and rail users.
The speed limit on the approaches to the level crossing will be reduced from 110 kilometres per hour to 80km/h in both directions.
The same restrictions apply to the Newell Highway near Parkes, with the speed limit on the northern and southern approaches to the level crossings at Tichborne and Parkes cut back to 80km/h in both directions.
Transport for NSW Regional Director West Alistair Lunn said a speed limit reduction at this rail level crossing was being introduced as part of a NSW Government campaign to improve safety at level crossings across regional NSW through the Railway Level Crossing (RLX) Speed Reduction Program.
“Crash statistics show that from 2008 to 2021 there were 83 collisions between trains and cars at level crossings in NSW and, sadly, 10 people lost their lives,” he said.
“Lowering the speed limit reminds all drivers of the need to slow down and be fully aware of their surroundings as they approach a level crossing, making it safer for all.”
New signage has been installed on the approaches to the crossings to advise motorists of the changes. All drivers are advised to slow down in the area.
