The national secretary and almost all branch officers for the Rail Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) will be elected unopposed thanks to four years of privatisation and contracting out, the union said.

RTBU national secretary Roger Jowett said the last four years since the previous union elections had been marked by a concerted effort to regain members when the Australian National Railways, the Victorian public transport system and the Western Australian freight railways were sold.

"The return of almost all the current branch secretaries and myself without opposition is a sign that the members recognise the organising and campaigning style of the union, and the need to ensure the rejuvenation of the union structures which is now underway," Mr Jowett said.

Honorary positions on the union’s national executive are being contested which "reflects the union’s tradition of democratic contests as well as the emergence of new activists," he said.

Normal turnout in RTBU elections is about 30%.
