Rail tunnel under Perth confirmed

A 1.65-km tunnel under Perth will link Western Australia’s new Mandurah rail line and the extended northern suburbs line.

The tunnel plan is designed to revitalise the Swan River foreshore and Northbridge areas.

It includes a new Esplanade train station providing greater access to the river, the busport and Convention Centre and an underground extension to the existing Perth Central Station.

The Mandurah-Clarkson railway will now enter a tunnel along the foreshore, to a station on the Esplanade, then continue under William Street to an deep extension of Perth Central station, where it will link with the Northern Suburbs line, re-emerging west of Lake Street.

Costings suggest the tunnel will add $15.5m to the project’s $1.4bn budget.
