Rail sector launches development program to retain workers

Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) has launched a professional development program with Engineers Australia aimed at improving the retention rate of skilled engineering staff in the rail industry.

The scheme is being initially piloted by ARTC in South Australia and is intended to be rolled out nationally to all ARTC offices throughout Australia.

Completion of the program will lead to chartered engineer status for both professional and paraprofessional engineers, with postnominals to follow.

The assessment for chartered status requires a successful interview conducted by a panel of senior engineers, a presentation to the panel on a significant engineering project and a series of attested episode reports demonstrating an appropriate level of work experience.

The program will work hand in hand with a mentoring program the ARTC successfully introduced for all members of its company across its national nail network in 2006.
