Rail photography competition offers up to $19k in prizes

The 2019 inaugural Australian Railroad Photo Competition, ‘Moving Moments’, is for photographers and rail buffs alike and runs from September 15 to November 15, 2019.

With cash prizes of up to $6,000, each photo submitted by entrants must relate to Australian urban rail transit, passenger transport, freight locomotives, or anything else related to railways. Whether your photo is taken from a train, is of a train, a station, railroad tracks, a rail crossing – it’s up to you.

The competition, sponsored by CRRC, concludes with an awards ceremony at Melbourne Town Hall on December 1, where the top 50 photos will be displayed in a formal photographic exhibition. Prestigious judges together with many distinguished guests will be attending the event.

Competition categories include:

  1. The CONVENIENCE of rail travel – e.g. Moments captured from your daily commute.
  2. The ROMANTIC mode of transport – e.g. The beauty of nature seen from or surrounding a train
  3. Images from your DAILY LIFE on a train – e.g. Reading a book on the way to work
  4. The power of FREIGHT TRAINS – e.g. A majestic freight train travelling through an Australian landscape
  5. Expert SMARTPHONE photographers – if you don’t own a professional camera, it’s okay – we only care about beautiful rail scenes

A cash prize of $6,000 will be awarded to the best Professional Photography entry, with the winner also receiving a return flight from Sydney to Beijing. Two runner-up prizes of $3,000 will also be awarded, along with three further prizes of $1,500 apiece.

In addition, 10 winners in the Smartphone Photography category will receive $200 prizes each, and one People’s Choice winner will receive $500, for having the photo most highly voted on the competition website.

Competition rules:

  • photos must be taken of or from Australian trains, subways, railroads, tracks, stations, etc. and relate to trains/rail travel
  • one photo per entrant
  • entrants in the Smartphone Photography Award Section must take their photos using a mobile phone
  • entrants can be from anywhere in the world but their photo must have been taken in Australia
  • Top 50 entrants will be notified via email and required to provide the organiser with their original photo for the exhibition at the official Australian Railway Photo Competition Award Ceremony.
