Rail pay comes out number one while NSW still the king

<p>In 2006&#4707, the highest average weekly salaries in the transport and storage sector were found in rail, topping the list with $1,436.70 a week $580 more than the weekly average of road transport <em>the Lloyd’s List DCN</em> found this morning (Tuesday, March 3).</p> <p>The findings were published in the Australian Transport Statistics Yearbook 2007 by the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) and included a range of facts about the state of the Australian transport industry.</p> <p>New South Wales consistently topped the lists for moving the most freight across all forms of transport, except rail.</p> <p>In 2004&#4705, NSW transported 28.1bn tonnes of freight by rail while Victoria only moved 6.6m tonnes for the same year.</p> <p>But Queensland and Western Australia dominated, with 52.7m and 81.3m tonnes of freight moved by rail respectively.</p> <p>Rail infrastructure in Australia has been a point of debate lately with Pacific National recently withdrawing from the grain rail in NSW and Victoria.</p> <p>The yearbook also mapped the grim side of the industry, showing 40 fatalities in the different forms of transport.</p> <p>Victoria had the worst rail safety record in 2006 with 14 deaths.</p> <br />
