Rail industry targets people retention issues

The rail industry could suffer a net outflow of people during the next five to 10 years, warns a new report by the Australasian Railway Association into ways of improving staff retention.

&#8220Before this report was finalised, the rail industry knew there was a problem in trying to keep our human resources, but we did not know why or to what extent this problem was affecting our industry," ARA chief executive Bryan Nye said.

"Now we can take proper actions to strategically address the identified issues.&#8221

The report was funded by the Transport and Logistics Centre and the Department of Transport and Regional Services.

It will help the ARA’s Rail Skills and Career Council develop programs in giving rail an attractive image, updating ideas on skills development, developing a more contemporary approach to workplace relations, and better collecting and monitoring of human resources data in the industry.
