Rail a priority for new grain partners

Western Australian grain handling and storage company Cooperative Bulk Handling (CBH) and its new partner, the Grain Pool of WA, are starting to take advantage of the synergies arising from their merger.

In particular, they are looking at ways of integrating marketing, storage and handling activities.

CBH chief executive officer Imre Mencshelyi said: "For example, in the logistics area CBH manages the utilisation of rail resources in WA, yet the marketers actually pay for those resources.

"We are allocated a set number of trains, for which the marketers pay whether or not they are fully utilised.

"There have been circumstances in the past, where CBH has not maximised the use of rail due to storage difficulties at the port or lack of shipping.

"We are now working to determine how to make better use of rail, even though it wouldn’t normally be in CBH’s best interests."
