Radical Hunter coal proposal withdrawn

Pacific National and Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) have formally withdrawn an application for a vessel management system for the port of Newcastle.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) last month rejected an application to introduce the system for an interim period.

The New South Wales Government &#8211 which was strongly opposed to the plan &#8211 instead appointed former state premier Nick Greiner to head an independent review.

The proposal would have based coal allocations on rail contracts, rather than port capacity.

The ACCC has given initial go-ahead for the continued use of a capacity balancing system.
