Queenslanders have been asked to have their say on a new mural that will adorn the recently upgraded Buranda Station in Brisbane.

Five designs, from artists Aurora Campbell, Yannick Blattner, Joel Fergie (The Zookeeper), Fintan Magee and Fuzeillear, have been shortlisted to be immortalised on the walls of the station.

The public can vote for their favourite until 5pm on 22 February, either via QR codes on posters in and around Buranda station or online through the Queensland Rail website.

Queensland Rail Urban Art Coordinator Daniel Brock said it was difficult to choose a winner between the five designs, so they’re asking the community for help.

He emphasised that each concept celebrates the local area in its own unique way.

“Fintan Magee’s piece presents a series of framed ‘windows’ using glass, light and reflection to explore space, movement and the history of Stones Corner,” he said.

“Aurora Campbell’s work draws on time spent sketching at the local pub, Buranda station and walking along Norman Creek, while Fuzeillear’s concept reflects the traditional meaning of Buranda as the ‘windy place’.

“Joel Fergie (The Zookeeper) presents a stylised banksia landscape where people and nature coexist, and Yannick Blattner’s design incorporates scenes of summer activity, flowing water, movement and connection. We congratulate all five talented finalists on their beautiful and thoughtful pieces.”

The project is part of Queensland Rail’s Positive pARTnerships program, which works with local artists to deliver public art that beautifies stations and builds community pride and ownership.

The program has delivered more than 200 projects across the Queensland Rail network, covering about 27,000 square metres on station buildings, subways, sound barriers and other infrastructure.

Buranda station was recently upgraded to improve accessibility and safety for passengers, with new features including a footbridge with lift access, full-length high-level platforms and accessible bathrooms.
